Diabetes and Normal Blood Sugar Levels
Diabetes mellitus leads to persistently elevated blood sugar levels that can over a period of time cause damage to the body and ultimately lead to multiple health problems that are associated with diabetes.
A normal sugar level is currently considered to be less than 140 mg/dL two hours after eating.
Generally speaking, most people without diabetes would have blood sugar levels hovering around 70 to 80 mg/dL before meals. Yet again, in some people, 60 is quite normal and in others it could be 90.
Most people’s sugar levels wouldn’t fall below 60 mg/dL,
Although sugar levels can be less than 100 mg/dL when fasting but shouldn’t fall below 60 mg/dL even with prolonged fasting.
Blood glucose levels tend to be at their lowest just before meals during the day.
Normal reading on a monitor would be between 4-8, under 4 would be an indicator to encourage eating toast/jam for example.
Over 8 would not necessitate action.
Whilst you may not carry or be trained to use BM equipment, there are situations where the patient or family use their own and provide a reading.
